Introduction/History

Upper Bukit Timah

Right in the central region of Singapore is Bukit Timah, a place known for its ritzy condominiums and landed property. Also an educational hub, Bukit Timah is home to a few of the most prestigious schools in Singapore. Bukit Timah’s namesake comes from Singapore’s tallest hill. Over 150 years ago, when the area was still a jungle, tigers roamed and there was even an incident where residents of Bukit Timah were attacked by the tigers. In 1845, the British began development of Bukit Timah as a means to get rid of the tigers. Bukit Timah plays an important role in Singapore’s history as the site of surrender to the Japanese during World War II. In Bukit Timah, the houses are usually costly and spacious. Some notable condominiums in the area include Pandan Valley and Adam Park Condominium.
